Movie heralds were small, flyer-like advertisements distributed to promote upcoming films, primarily from the silent era through the mid-20th century. They were an essential part of early movie marketing, especially before the dominance of trailers and widespread newspaper ads. Studios and theaters used them to generate excitement and awareness about new releases.  They were particularly useful before Television began to populate American households in the mid-late 1950s.   Today original movie theater Heralds are Highly desirable to collectors. 

About 7-8 years ago we acquired one of these Classic Film Holy Grails, and it sold the same day we listed it.    A Spectacular original vintage 1939 Movie Theater Herald for this iconic masterpiece, “The Wizard of OZ”.   There are so many things about this amazing find including the condition which other than a very smack insignificant chip on the left border, which doesn’t effect any art or text on this Rare Treasure.   In addition the artwork and storytelling is surreal!   No OZ collection can exist without this Breath-taking GEM!    

*NOTE: Also this Gem has invaluable provenance on it including the actual Theater is was used by and the dates of the OZ showing, Christmas week 1939! 

Condition:  Excellent!  Other than a very smack insignificant chip on the left border, which doesn’t effect any art or text on this Rare Treasure.  Folded as issued horizontally twice.   NOTE:   Two of the others Ive seen appear on the market were Also vertical folded which created a vertical fold line down the middle.   THIS one has No vertical fold line.  Only three light horizontal folds as issued.   And it is one of the largest Heralds ever made, being 8x20" when Opened

An unrestored Herald that displays signs of use. May include light edge or fold wear, very minor insignificant paper loss.

This wonderful Herald for one of the greatest fantasy films ever made shows something none of the original posters does: Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch. 

This herald has the Al Hirschfeld art in the letters of the title that was also used on one of the one-sheets!
