The 1956 Topps Elvis Presley set consists of 66 cards measuring 2-1/2” by 3-1/2” each. The set is unique in that its imagery not only focuses on the “King of Rock and Roll” but also on Elvis the actor. As a result, it’s presented as two distinct “sets.” The first 46 cards center on his music career, with card fronts featuring a full-color photo with a thin, blank border, and a white-lettered caption set inside a red guitar graphic at the corner. Card backs have a blue rectangular border holding the card number in white, plus an illustration of an operator and a “fan question.” The text below is meant to sound like Presley answering the fan's question. (This set is sometimes referred to as “Ask Elvis” because of that reverse design.)
The remaining 20 cards focus on his role in his big screen debut, “Love Me Tender.” These cards have a color picture from the film, with a clapboard rather than a red guitar. Card backs are also different, with a filmstrip graphic holding the card title and card number; a block of text covers the film’s plot. The bottom of the card has a second banner identifying the subset as a “series of 20 scenes.” Coinciding with the start of Elvis’ career, this Topps issue has remained popular with non-sport card collectors as well as music and film enthusiasts.
