Wizard of OZ
Original Authentic British Lobby Card, 1939
The Emerald City Ride to Meet the Wizard
(Note: this scene Never appeared in Any US posters or lobby cards)
80 years ago and what many believe the greatest movie ever made, the Wizard of Oz was only released in a handful of countries during its initial release in 1939. But those countries who did get hit with the Original magic of OZ, went all out promoting it. One country that embraced OZ with some exquisite lobby cards was Britain/UK. Based on my research there are two contrasting dates that "The Wizard of OZ" was officially released in British Movie Theaters. , November 1939 and January 1940. Either way the Brits were captivated by the Oz phenomenon right out of the starting gate just a couple months after Americans experienced the thrill of a lifetime in late Summer of 1939. And their excitement was captured in these Gorgeous life-like 8x10" lobby cards . (Note: The first Latin America country to premier OZ was Brazil in November 1939 and Greece actually premiered Oz before some US cities like NY City)
And for the first time in our 39 years collecting movie history, we have acquired Four of the Rare Original Gorgeous 1939/1940 British “Wizard of OZ” lobby cards (listed separately - see below under Other Vintage Treasures You May Love").

Most of the OZ released countries produced their own marketing material and movie posters, while some just copied the US posters . In the case of the UK, they outdid the US in some aspects. In particular, the British “Wizard of OZ” lobby cards were quite spectacular, as they captured scenes from OZ, that did NOT appear in ANY of the US Oz movie paper. Iconic OZ scenes including “Dorothy receives Witches broom at the castle”, the “Carriage ride in Emerald City” and rare “Munchkin land” scene…. And one lobby card captures the Most popular American lobby card, the Wicked Witch hiding behind the tree (This was the Only American lobby card that showed the Wicked Witch and this British lobby card made it even Better!).
This along with the stunning colors is what makes the British “Wizard of OZ’ 1939/40 lobby cards so exciting and highly sought after.
Also, their 8x10” makes the ideal presentation size, not requiring a large dedicated wall space like the larger movie posters. The diverse framing and presentation options are endless. Also, the colors on the Brit lobby cards are stunning.
Referred to as the British FOH (Front of House), some collectors think these are from 1949 to coincide with the American first re-release of Oz in that year. However, the UK did not have any theatrical re-releases of OZ, hence these are from the original 1939/40 release. Here is link to the IMDB “Wizard of Oz’ international official release dates .
